Your Mac & running work

Know what keeps running when you change views, close the window, or leave your desk.

Newton is a Mac desktop app. The current desktop configuration requires macOS 14 or later; use the download offered for your Mac and follow its installation guidance. Appleseed connects to the work hosted by that Mac.

The window and the background service

The desktop window is an interface to Newton’s background service. Closing the window does not stop that service or cancel the work it owns. Reopening the app reconnects to the running service.

This does not mean that every CLI stays running forever, or that a task continues uninterrupted through a Mac restart. Saved state, provider session recovery, and currently running processes are different things. Check the bot and its task status after a restart.

Sleep, schedules, and phone access

Scheduled work needs the Mac awake and the background service running. Remote phone access also needs the Mac online. Newton does not turn a sleeping or offline Mac into a cloud worker.

Open Settings → Daemon & recovery to inspect service controls. A service restart can close idle CLI sessions and interrupt active work; use the app’s readiness checks and read its notice before proceeding.

Local work still uses connected services

Newton keeps branch state and workspaces on your Mac. Bots can send prompts and selected context to their configured AI providers, and connected tools may read or write external services. Local storage does not mean every operation is offline.

A branch organizes work; it does not sandbox a provider’s filesystem or isolate shared external accounts. The provider’s permission settings and the services you connect determine what actions are available.

Before repeating a failed action

Read the result and check the destination. If an external action timed out, it may already have happened. Inspect the card, Activity, and the target service before asking for another publish, send, or upload.

For a repeatable app problem, use Feedback near the bottom of the sidebar. Include the screen, what you tried, what you expected, and what happened instead.
